Free croquet lessons this evening

Most of us have played “backyard croquet” with family and friends over the years, are you ready for the next step? Come out this evening at 5:45pm wearing flat soled shoes, and we’ll show you how to play the formal game, on a beautiful summer afternoon! The only caveat is you need to wear flat soled shoes.

We hope to continue these free lessons on every Wednesday evening for the rest of the summer. Don’t hesitate to contact our croquet coach, Bruce (bg at rewerx.com) to RSVP your free lessons!

2010 Memberships, the season is half over!

Still looking for something to do this summer that is new, gets you outdoors and physical? New to Victoria? Come try the CP Lawn Bowling club! Memberships have just been dropped 50%, it is now only $75 for a full 2010 membership! We offer lawn bowling 7 days a week, and croquet several days a week as well, not to mention all of our extra curricular activities. We just might have the youngest median membership in North America, with teenage members to members in their 90s, there is no reason you shouldn’t check us out!

The CPLBC is eligible to participate to a maximum of $1,000.00 during the period from June 4, 2010 to May 7, 2011. The approved project is for the purchase of new or good quality used bowls for the club. There is a special need for smaller sized bowls for training novice bowlers.

Here is how the Smile Card Program works:

Obtain a Smile Card from the Club Coordinator Ruth Suter (250-721-9904, e-mail gsuter@telus.net).
Take the card to any Thriftys Service Counter, and load up the card using cash, debit card or credit card in an amount that reflects your estimated purchases over say a week, month or longer. Let’s say the amount is $400.00. The minute this amount is loaded on to your Smile Card, the CPLBC account is credited with 5% of that amount ($20.00) towards the approved project. The Club receives accrued funds monthly.
This program has no cost to you. It is an easy way for customers to earn funds for their organization just by shopping at a Thriftys store. If we as a Club spend $20,000.00 at Thriftys before May 7, 2011, the Club receives the full $1,000.00.

Croquet – Singles tournament this Sunday

This tournament is open to all full members of the club. The court will be open from 4p.m. on Saturday afternoon onwards for practice, as the green is quite fast right now. The tournament itself will start at 10a.m. on Sunday, June 27 and will likely continue through to 5 or 6 o’clock. Two levels of play will allow intermediates and experts play to their hearts’ content. The tournament fee is a modest $20 and includes refreshments on the Sunday. Please contact activities@cplawnbowling.org as soon as possible with your intention to participate as we would like to start developing the pairings.

Canada Day – Barefoot bowls, Beer and BBQ event!

Show up around 5p.m. on Canada Day and let us treat you to a BBQ dinner on us! We will have a cash bar and would love to show you how to lawn bowl if you’re interested in giving it a try. Show up promptly, as once lessons are done we expect we’ll play a couple games. For the evening you are encouraged to bowl in bare feet!
This is an all ages event, your only requirement is that you must be able to roll a lawn bowl from one end of the green to the other. We are asking all members of the club to bring a friend or two. We encourage you to stop by and introduce yourself if we haven’t met you before.

Marker’s Clinic June 24 @7:00pm

What is a Marker? The main role of a marker is to assist Singles players in their game. A marker should be unobtrusive in order to allow the players to play their game without distractions or additional stress. They should know their duties and be a good judge of distance. Duties include: answering questions about the head, measuring, chalking touchers, keeping score, etc. (see IBB Laws of the Game, especially Law 72, Duties of a Marker)

Markers Clinic to be presented at Oak Bay LBC, Carnaervon Park, Oak Bay on Thursday, 24 (not 29) June at 7:00 p.m. (approx. 1-1/2 hours) by Nick Watkins from Juan de Fuca LBC. Club cleanup May 25th

In readiness for the Rose Bowl Tournament, 1 and 2 June – please join a team of volunteers to tidy the green and clubhouse. Please help keep the clubhouse and green clean between monthly clean-up sessions by wiping up spills, stowing garbage, brushing the floor (broom and mop in the grey cupboard in the locker room), washing up and storing china and utensils, etc. Speaking of lockers – please ensure yours is tidy and labelled (no clothes or shoes to be left loose in the locker room, please - thanks!)

Lawn bowlers sign lease

Victoria’s Canadian Pacific Lawn Bowling club has signed a long-term lease with the city that will allow it to remain at its Belleville Street site another 15 years.

The club signed the lease this week, after more than a year of negotiations.

“It’s been a long, uphill battle but now we’re smooth sailing on the way down,” club president Kris Constable said yesterday.
