We’re excited to launch the Settlers of Catan league! Starting Monday, November 28th at 7pm, we’re going to host a bi-weekly Settlers of Catan evening. If you’ve got a copy of the game, bring it with you, including any expansion packs. If you don’t have a copy, don’t worry, just come down anyway, we’ll show you how to play! As this will be a first event, it will continue on the 2nd and 4th Monday evening of every month. Please send this to anyone you think might be interested!

If you’re on Facebook, join our Facebook event for the launch!
Thanks to all who attended our Annual General Meeting this week. We’re excited for the year ahead, and will continue on our path of increasing membership and utilization of the club.
(1) This Friday, 8 July, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. 28 Men and Women Victoria Newcomers* – please come out to welcome this mixed group who’d like to try bowling and croquet (contact Bruce, 294-0719, bg@rewerx.com). We’ll be using 3 or 4 rinks for our guests so the remaining four can be available for regular bowling and croquet. The Newcomers will be bringing their own refreshments and will use our kitchen and dishwares. Please come out at 5:40 p.m. to help set up the rinks, to set out kitchen supplies, to demonstrate the games, and to help tidy up afterwards (* revenue event, potential members!).
(2) Saturday, 9 July – Church of our Lord (COOL) Strawberry Tea, 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. – it’s our tradition to waive our regular Saturday tea and instead to support our good neighbours by buying strawberry tea ($7.00) after a 12 or 14-end Saturday game (at approx. 3:00 p.m.)
(3) Thursday, 14 July, 9:00 a.m. – CP’s Women’s Pairs – Ladies: let’s make sure this is a go! Add your name to the sign-up sheet in the binder at the Reception Desk (Carol, 386-7628). Bring $10 entry fee, lunch, goodies for the snack table – good bowling!
(4) Friday, 15 July, 5:30 p.m. – please come out to Welcome Oak Bay LBC to Canadian Pacific for an evening of good bowling (visitors love our super green and gorgeous garden – thank you Gordie, Kees and team!). Sign up so that Carol and Lorne know the numbers participating and can make a draw. Please bring some special goodies as it’s customary to welcome our guests with a tea, coffee (other beverages, of course), and a tasty finger-food supper after the game.
(5) Sunday, 17 July, 9:00 a.m. – CP’s Men’s Pairs (sign up sheet in Reception desk binder) – Lorne, 384-5499 (same conditions as for Women’s Pairs, above).
(6) Friday, 12 August, 7:00 p.m. – we’re invited to Vic West LBC for bowling by floodlight, sign up in the Reception Desk binder so we can tell Vic West how many to include in the draw.
Regular Bowling Draws at 1:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Casual bowling on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Regular Croquet – Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Have you heard about this newly popular lawn bowling thing – all the rage
downunder and in Vancouver. Slightly curious to give this highly social
sport a try? Now’s your chance at one of the sport’s best venues!
We’re enrolling teams of 3 (you create your own team name), with maximum one
experienced person per team, to come out to our 4 night “league” play. There
will be 4 evenings of play: June 24, July 8, July 22, and August 5th (6 PM).
You may want to have one or two substitutes on your team as well, to allow
for a possible absence on one or more nights (takes the heat off each player
of potentially letting down their team due to one no show).
What are the requirements? It’s $30/person to join the league (this can be a
credit towards full CPLBC membership if you like it). You must wear flat
soled shoes (no heels) or you’ll have to play Aussie style (barefoot).
That’s it!
This is sure to be a great time to meet new people and try something new,
don’t miss it. Registrations are first come, first served, until it’s full.
To register your team, please contact Bruce Gillespie, Activities Chair,
Canadian Pacific Lawn Bowling Club (bg@rewerx.com 250-294-0719). New to town
or don’t have a team yet, contact Bruce anyways and we’ll create a team with
you on it!
I wanted to take this opportunity to address the membership. We have had a very successful season and as we wind down I thought it would be appropriate to take a moment to congratulate everyone on such a great job this year. As many of you are aware, the Executive has undergone a few changes for the 2010/2011 season. As Past President, we are saying goodbye to Ray Turner as his role on the Executive has reached its end. Ray has served this club for so many years that I, for one, would welcome him to any of our planning or Executive meetings with open arms. Thank you, Ray, for everything you have done. With Ray moving on, this means Kris Constable now sits in the Past President’s role. Kris joined this club during its darkest hour, and with the help of several individuals, was able to successfully negotiate a 15-year lease. Kris took pride in his role as President, resulting in a significant boost in membership, several successful open houses, increased use of the clubhouse, and a higher profile of the club within the local community and beyond. I am extremely grateful for all of the hard work and fun Kris has brought to the club. A the now acting Past President, I am sure his involvement will continue to bring attention and interest in our club. Thank you so much, Kris, for everything.
I want to talk about service and passion for a moment. I joined the Executive and the club because of my relationship with Kris. Kris showed a passion for saving this club, and spent time working with everyone to make that a reality. I bought into that passion and I continue to serve because of that. I am not an avid bowler–don’t get me wrong, I love the game–but I am not able to attend many of the draws. What I can do is serve our membership with my energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to community. Our club is an amazing example of green space in a city setting; I am proud to be involved and am looking forward to a fantastic 2010/2011 season.
I would like us to focus this coming season on utilization. How can we as a club bring more people to the green and our lovely space? The process is started, we just need to fine-tune our methods. Our club offers a fun recreational venue, but it also offers community. Whether you are a lawn bowler, a croquet player or a casual member, you are all welcome. This sense of community needs to be celebrated and acknowledged. By bringing this passion and service, we will continue to grow our community and attract more members to our club.
Thank you to everyone who stayed involved for the upcoming season, and for all of your hard work in 2009/2010. For those not involved last year, please consider coming out and supporting your club. We need your energy, passion, and commitment to cultivating a vibrant community. Sincerely, Nils Skalin.
